Hi everyone!, first of all...

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!!!

It´s been a while since my last update on my own blog, sorry to my oldest followers, and welcome to the new ones!!!

So, as you can see my last post it was about "Planet 51", movie that it was released in cinemas on November 2009. Well, so after "Planet 51" Ilion Animation Studios was working on the next project, so do I, until I decided that it was time to me to step up and try what I always wanted since I started as animator, to work in one of the big animation studios in USA. Lucky me, at the end of 2009 I got an offer from Blue Sky Studios, creators of the" Ice Age" trilogy and movies like "Horton Hear´s a Who" and "Robots". It was one of the best days in my life, I remember I couldn´t even type my keyboard to email them back accepting the job, not only because of the new job, but about to live in a new city (New York), new language, new life, new everything!!! Loved it!!!

On February 2010 I started working at Blue Sky as animator for the film "Rio", and I have to say that it is one of the best experiences ever as animator and person, the quality of every single artist/friends here it´s amazing! I worked on "Rio"until November 2010, the movie it´s ready to be release on April 2011. You can check it out the lastest trailer here:

Now, that we are done with "Rio", we are working on the next project, "Ice Age: Continental Drift", I have to say that I´m so excited about this project, "Ice Age" it was always a reference talking about animation, so it´s a real pleasure to be part of the animation team in this new adventure. This week I´m reeeeaally busy at work, cause we are finishing the last animation sequence of Planet 51 film...But,I want to share with all of u more photos of my last travel, in fact was my last travel of 2008 and the first one of 2009, cause I went to Bulgaria since 29 December untill 2 Janury, and was an amazing travel in a new city, culture and experience, so, heres some shots of my days in Bulgaria!

What a nice surprise when I get out from home this morning to go to work and I saw this special little things falling from the sky...later another great surprise, we didn´t work today at Ilion because the roads and public services doesn´t work so well and was very hard to arrive at the studio, now, it´s time to enjoy the snowing free friday, yeeeeeaaaaahh!!!

I just back from my xmas holidays and it´s time to back to work. Was a great year with a lot of great moments to remember and finish 2008 with a big smile on my face, thanks to all the people who makes special this 2008 for me. Finally, I want to say Happy New Year to all the world and I hope this 2009 will be better than 2008 in all the aspects!

Planet 51 First Vision on Big Screen!!!

Today all the Ilion Animation Studios team had a great experience, we watched 40 minutes of Planet 51 film on Big Screen, our own film!!! And I can say that was AWESOME!!! Really exciting to watch all the hard work of everybody together, and I don´t know, personally, I had a lot of great feelings inside me, was a special moment for me and the rest of the team.

To finish, I want to say that all the artist at Ilion Animation Studios rocks!, they are making an amazing work in all the aspects, great work guys!!!

Sometimes on saturday nights I took pictures in the Parkings. The ambient inside it´s dark, with a kind of light never seen on other places, normally are dirty places, the sounds inside are differents...nice place to test with your camera!

On July we were in Granada me and three more Ilion guys, a special city in the south of Spain, but one of the most special was the last night at dinner time, an old "maestro" brought us a special Flamenco song...another great art, music art in live, so great!!! Fmx it´s one of the most famous festivals in Europe, and this year Ilion participated with two conferences/talks about Panet 51 feature film.

More than a Comic Strip

The task of the rigging department is creating a connection between

the modeling and animation departments.

The initially static models are articulated so all movements and

emotions required by the story can be expressed effectively.

This involves a wide range of challenges, starting with simple

props like pens and newspapers to complex characters that

require hundreds of animation controls and months of work for

defining aesthetically pleasing deformations in any pose.

Pipelines and tools need to be developed for each individual

project. This is especially true for a project like "Planet 51",

where we needed to create over 300 unique characters and

hundreds of props, all of them necessary to give the computer

generated world the required depth to believably tell the story.

In this talk we are going to give an outline of the process we

developed to be able to efficiently generate rigs for a diverse

range of individually designed characters.

Kai Stavginski began as a generalist TD in the animation

industry. From 2004, Kai has worked at commercials and

animation studios, developing character rigging tools and

pipelines. In 2006, joined Ilion Studios taking on the role of

Character TD of the studio´s first feature film, "Planet 51".

Pablo San Roman worked for US multinational companies for

over 7 years. In March 2006, he became the Human Resources

Director at Ilion Animation Studios.

Ilion Animation Studios was started in 2002 by the founders of

Pyro Studios, one of the world’s leading video game

developers. Situated in the outskirts of Madrid, Ilion was

founded to create state-of-the-art computer animated movies

for theatrical release around the world, using purpose-built

technology enabling it to compete on the highest level with

other leading animation studios, and currently has its first 3D

CGI movie in production, “PLANET 51”, as well as a second

project already in the development stage.

- Modern animation: a short opening talking about

the animation nowadays.

-Animation at Ilion: Fernando Moro will introduce Ilion as one

of the most important studios in the world at present,

and will talk about how we do animation at Ilion, patterns followed,

quality required, the animators day to day work and

what do we expect from them.

-Sequence Analyisis: the speech will be illustrated and

commented with samples of the sequences we are working on

at the moment, that we consider that are very representative and

of a superb quality.

- Company vision and Animators career path: after Planet 51

there will be a solid industry for animators.

- Questions / Meet & Greet: there will be time enough to go through

audience doubts or comments and talk specifically about

Ilion recruiting plans with Pablo San Roman.

One Year...

This week it was a special day for me and three more animators, because we have one year working in Ilion Animation Studios on feature film Planet 51. We start to work on it the same day and now we want to celebrate it as the first day.

From left to right we are Isaak Fernandez / Qcho Sanz / Pako Bagur and Christian Dan, all great friends and great animators, it´s a pleasure meet this guys and all the rest of the animation department.

My holidays are finish the past week and I´m working hard in my job, and then, in my house as a freelance character animator, and then, when I have spare time, when I have...I´m working on my Batman short slowly, but I finished four new shots!, and here you can see one frame of a finish shot.

Hi!, ok here you can see a final Background of another shot of the short. Basically I try to put simple forms for represent Gotham in this case and at the same time give it a "theatrical" aspect like puppet backgrounds, this is one of my first ideas. I paint all the background it´s painting in photoshop with only the reference of one frame of the shot for level the B & W colors and contrast. So waiting for your comments!

Light & color test

Yepa! This time I show u another light and color test, this time my objective is try to create a more satured style and break the dark environment of Gothan and Batman. The result for me is good, but...I think this style give it too much comedy style and I don´t want to do a full comedy short, but it have funny testing with this colors, maybe for the Joker are a good color style, but for Batman, the B & W is better :-)

So here´s another color key study that I realize during the short. I normaly paint on a black paper mixing pastel and pencil colors. I think the black, as background, represents all the environment of Batman and it´s the best start and base for all the color keys of the short. I like paint a lot, and I have very color keys as this...I´ll post it.

Hi! another week and new image material for the Batman project fans ;-)
So, here I post one of the most important picture that helps me to decide the final look of the short, my first idea for the short look was black & white colors, but with the time I tested with some shots in different colors, and then finally I returned at the first idea, and one of the reason is that image, I´m very happy with it when I finished and I think " all the short must be as this one!!! "

This time I want to show you a special picture, and it is special because I tried to represent part of the personal story of the Batman character and his feelings about this part of his life, his death parents.
I think is important too go in the character and all his life, because all the experiences of the character define his persoanlity and actitud, and Batman is more like a character, is a story, a sad story...

Old Material

Well, I think the final part for finish the short will be very slow, ilumination, rendering, composition, postproduction, music, sounds, bla bla bla...so I post some old material for all the people who visit this site and are interested in my short. Here you can see the first test of a background 2D with the final character in 3D, I´m really happy with the result, but, at the end I decide to give more "dramatic" look and no brilliant colors, because for me, Batman is a dark character, with a dark Gotham environment and a dark history.

Well, many hours of test and more, but finally I have the first 6 seconds of the short with all the composition and postproduction!!! yuhuhuhuuuuuuuu.
As you can see , there´s not very different of the last image test, the difference is simple, now, all it´s "moving" and it´s very grateful see the rain falling, the background, the shadows on the floor, etc... I´m happy, but I want to see the short finished with this final look :-)

I´m really happy!, because the past week I finished all the animation of the short. Now my work is put on animation details, edition, backgrounds, ilumination, effects, music, etc...I think is too much work as animation, jajajajaja, but I have some friends for support me.
Ok, here I put a test of ilumiantion and final look, and I say I´m very happy with the result, take a look!

Contrast in animation

Other important thing for animation is the siluet of the character, and Batman for me is the perfect siluet character, because he´s always moving deep in the shadows and dark places with low lights. My objective is try contrast always the background with his black color cloths and don´t lose the animation siluet poses.

Ok!, two more image of Batman (do it all directly in Photoshop), this time the Batman design it´s the final version.
Another important thing for me doing this personal project it´s try to do it a different visual look, a personal style, and well, as you can see, he have a general cubic form, because I think represents the personality of the character.
